
The Name "Sambar" is a Hindi word for the animal. Found in India and Indonesia in terrestrial humid tropical and subtropical forest, up to an altitude if 3000 meters. Only males have antlers, which usuall have three tines each ande can reach a length of 90cm. The diet consists mainly of grass, leaves an wild fruit. When attacked, it oftens streams and swims away. Except for the mating season, it is solitary.
